2034: A Novel of the Next World War, Admiral James Stavridis & Elliot Ackerman

2034 was another cinematic book I read, but this one made me rethink about the way a possible next world war might start. Hopefully, we’ll not have the so called World War III.
This book focus on a futuristic description of what might be the start, development and end of the next world war. With China achieving the maximum military potential by 2034, the story describes with an impressive detail and engagement the conflict between one of the world’s oldest democratic countries, USA, and China.
Although the story is not real (may it never be), some facts and characters are based on real-life experiences and people. I got to know this on the February 2021 edition of the Wired magazine, uniquely dedicated to the book, where the authors explain this and other aspects in details on a exclusive interview. It was, in fact, through this edition, that contains the first 4 chapters, that I got to know the book.
Regarding the authors, Ackerman served five tours of duty as a Marine in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as one term as a White House fellow during the Obama administration. Stavridis commanded fleets of destroyers, a carrier strike group, and the US Southern Command before serving as supreme allied commander of NATO from 2009 to 2013; after that he became dean of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.
This is a must-read-book for everyone, specially for global leaders, who should look into it like an example of what shouldn’t be made, in order to avoid a world conflict. I truly recommend it and I’m already waiting for a cinematic adptation of the book.
